Sister Margaret guided her through various rooms; the kitchen, the bakery, the vestry, the beginnings of a library, and finally, into the main chapel. It was empty. As they entered, the nun made the sign of the cross and bent on one knee with her head bowed. Aveline, her back a ribbon of pain, refused to follow suite and stood where she was.

“Aveline,’’ whispered the Sister in urgent tones. “If you don’t do as we do, you will be beaten time and time again. You cannot win here.”

“You can break my body, but my spirit is above whatever you vile Sisters of Satan can conjure,” she snapped back.

Her retort caused the nun’s face to pale. She laid a hand on her arm. “Aveline, I mean you no harm and your plight is not unknown to us. I implore you now to learn our ways. Take your vows when it is time and you will find peace.”

“Never,” she spat out her word like a pellet of ice.

Sister Margaret paused and gazed into Aveline’s eyes. “Time changes many things, and we can only wait with patience for its workings to make themselves known. You are to remain here in this chapel until after Compline later this night, and then you will be shown to the dormitory. You will be given water but no food until tomorrow. These are the Abbess’ instructions. I will leave you now, so I suggest you pray and search your soul and ask for forgiveness and the love of Christ. The doors will be locked.” She turned to leave. “Until after Compline then.” With a nod of her head, she was gone.
